The Role
As a Commercial Credit Adjudicator within our credit
union, you will play a key role in supporting responsible credit decisions for
our commercial and small business members. This position is responsible for
independently assessing and approving commercial credit applications within
delegated authority, ensuring alignment with the credit union’s policies,
procedures, guidelines, risk appetite
and cooperative values. Your judgment and financial expertise will support the
growth of healthy, sustainable business lending relationships.
- Adjudicate commercial credit applications, including new loans, annual reviews, and amendments, within assigned approval limits.
- Conduct
thorough analysis of financial statements, cash flow, collateral, credit
history, and business risk factors.
- Evaluate
loan structures and provide recommendations to enhance risk mitigation
while supporting member requirements and success.
- Communicate
credit decisions clearly and constructively to commercial account managers
and other internal stakeholders.
- Ensure
compliance with internal credit policies, guidelines, procedures,
regulatory requirements and cooperative principles.
- Identify
and escalate complex or high-risk applications for further review or
approval as required.
- Participate
in periodic credit reviews, risk rating assessments, and portfolio
monitoring activities.
- Contribute
to ongoing improvements in adjudication practices and credit
policy/guideline development.
- Provide
guidance and support to frontline staff on credit structuring and policy
interpretation.
- Maintain
accurate documentation and rationale for all credit decisions.
- Stay
current with general economic indicators, industry trends/market
conditions and apply these knowledges to assess overall credit risk.
What we are
looking for:
- Post-secondary
education in finance, accounting, business, or a related field.
- Post-graduate
degree or other related designation (CFA, FRM, CA etc.) considered an
asset.
- Knowledge
and experience of syndications in Canada and Ontario is highly desirable.
- Minimum
3–5 years of experience in commercial lending, adjudication, or credit
risk analysis—experience within a credit union or cooperative financial
institution is preferred.
- Strong
knowledge of commercial credit principles, financial statement analysis,
and risk assessment techniques.
- Understanding
of the credit union system, values-based banking, and member-centric
service models.
- Working
knowledge of general banking, sound management principles, best practices
and retail banking industry trends and conditions
- Excellent
analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
- Strong
communication skills with the ability to convey decisions in a clear,
respectful, and constructive manner.
- Proficiency
with financial analysis tools and loan adjudication systems.
- Effective
understanding and use of Microsoft Office (Outlook, Excel, Word,
PowerPoint)
- Strong planning, organizational and time management skills
- Positive, confident, supportive and engaging interpersonal skills
- Demonstrated solid reasoning and judgment skills in decision making
- Ability to build relationships with employees by acting as a role model, providing leadership, a positive environment and
regular coaching staff through quality and constructive feedback.
- Ability to build trust with others, remain open to ideas and be supportive
